About Mike

Nestled in the rolling hills of Middle Tennessee in the small town of Columbia lies the woodshop of Mike Willis. An eighth generation Tennessean Mike was raised to believe a man is only as good as the work he accomplishes.

It was with a strong attention to detail and a commitment to service that Mike entered the profession of custom furniture design and chair building. His philosophy with regard to technique is to preserve the best of the past while always keeping an eye to new developments. Modern machinery has made some things better, but the old ways are still the best often enough. To that end you will find Mike's shop loaded with hand tools in amongst only the necessary modern equipment.

A hobbyist woodworker since the age of 11 Mike turned to professional woodworking after a successful career as a teacher in Alaska and Tennessee. After working in a high end cabinet shop in the San Francisco Bay area Mike returned to Tennessee to start his own business in 1999. He has spent years studying under the tutorage of the world renown Mike Dunbar at The Windsor Institute in Hampton, NH and is a knight in Dunbar's Royal Orders signifying a high degree of competency in the making of Windsor chairs.
