It is believed that Windsor chairs got their name as the result of a fox hunting episode in England during the reign of King George (Which one nobody knows). It seems that during the hunt the weather turned foul and the King sought refuge in the home of one of his subjects. There he discovered the wonders of a simple made chair. It's seat was a single piece of wood and his posterior did not go numb after sitting in it for a while due to its ergonomic shape. It's back allowed the king to sit back and rest. So impressed was the King that upon his return to Windsor Castle he ordered several of these chairs to be made for himself. Soon Windsors were all the rage.
In the American colonies of the early 1700's high fashion came from Europe. It was that way with clothing as well as furniture. At first Windsors were imported into America. It wasn't until around 1730 that the first American Windsors were produced. Those early Windsors were painted green and mostly served as garden furniture. It didn't take long for the simple elegant look to take hold in the new world. By 1790 Windsors were being produced in such numbers that they were actually listed as a commodity on some exchanges. It didn't take long for history to be made in Windsors either. Thomas Jefferson is said to have written The Declaration of Independence from the seat of a Windsor. George Washington owned them. As time went by the Windsor design underwent subtle changes and morphed into various styles. During the 1800's red was the predominant color of choice. Today it is black. But through all this time one thing has not changed; Windsor chairs are the best that can be made.

Why are Windsors the best?. It starts with the overall design. A Windsor has three basic components. The first is the legs which are joined together through the seat. The second is the seat itself which is sculpted and shaped to fit the contours of the human backside. Finally, the back is added at angles designed to allow a person to comfortably sit back in a supported manner. Put simply; Windsors are ergonomic. But the quality goes deeper than mere design. The Windsor is built to last. The techniques involved in building a Windsor in the traditional method take into account the very nature of the wood being used. Maple is used for legs because it is strong and sturdy. Pine is used for the seat because it is easily shaped. Oak is used for the backs because it can be easily bent. All of these pieces are joined together without nails or screws and it all adds up to a chair that actually increases in strength as you sit in it. That is why after two hundred years you can still find antique Windsors and why we say the chairs we make today will last generations.
